Draft Action Research Project Progress Report
a.
Title – Extracurricular Activities: Why are so many students missing out on a
good thing.
b.
Needs Assessment – Studies show that
students that are active in extracurricular Activities enjoy many benefits that
those that do not miss out on. On our
campus I surveyed our student body and found that only 25% of our students are
active in extracurricular activities.
c.
Objectives and Vision
of the action research project. (ELCC 1.1) – I hope to take my data gathered from
the survey that listed some of the reasons why students may not be able to be a
part of extracurricular activities and address those issues directly and find
ways to get more students active in extracurricular programs.
d.
Review of the
Literature and Action Research Strategy – Apply Best Practice to Student Learning
(LCC 2.3) – Randy Brown, Ph.D. "Extracurricular Activity: How does participation encourage positive
youth development?" Dr. Brown
writes about how students behaviors are affected in a positive manner when they
participate in extracurricular activities (Brown, 1) I will use the finding of Dr. Brown along
with the data from my survey to go to my principal with ideas to increase the
number of students on our campus that are active in extracurricular activities.
e.
Articulate the Vision
(ELCC 1.2) – I
will communicate my findings with the staff of our campus as a part of a
teacher in-service. The students and
parents will be notified of our new ways to get more students active with the
use of social media, letters home, marquee, web page and emails along with the
daily announcements and teacher announcements.
f.
Manage the
organization (ELCC 3.1) – The biggest area that will need to be organized will be
with transportation to work on a late bus so students can ride a bus home after
meetings and practice. I will need to
see if there is money that can fund the gas and driver. There will need to be a plan for more general
bus stops because resources will not allow for stop to be as frequent as regular
routes. This will be done with the
transportation department. Other ideas
that will need to be planned out is a student information rally that will be planned
by the staff leaders of each Activity.
We will use a pep rally schedule and allow the groups to set up booths
to promote their activities. We will
also have one in the evening for parents.
